The Legacies of American Slavery Database is designed to highlight the efforts of independent colleges and universities to reckon with the legacies of slavery, including but not limited to their own institutional histories. This is not a comprehensive list of resources or initiatives developed by members of the Council of Independent Colleges (CIC). Instead, it is just a sampling of their efforts to engage students and the public through curricular materials, research publications, archives, oral and digital exhibitions, podcasts, and more. The database is searchable and sortable by multiple criteria. Learn more about the Legacies initiative at legaciesofslavery.net.

The best way to search the database is by legacy theme. By default, the landing screen is set to “ALL” view. To search by theme, select a legacy theme at the top of the database; for example, if you were looking for institutions studying their own histories and reckoning with the past, select the “Institutional History & Reckoning” view below. Each “legacy theme” view as well as the “ALL” view is sorted alphabetically. You can always press CMD + F (or Ctrl + F on PC) to find a particular institution quickly.
